A Gentle Escape in the Peak District
Welcome to your peaceful Peak District escape. Whether it’s your first visit or you’re returning to soak up more of its charm, we’ve created a relaxing and inspiring itinerary that brings together scenic walks, timeless villages, hearty food, and a little local shopping. This week is all about slowing down, reconnecting with nature, and discovering the quieter pleasures of life.
Friday: Arrival & Settling In
Arrive at Top Riley Holiday Cottages in the afternoon. Let the countryside welcome you in as you unpack and settle into your spacious cottage. Enjoy a gentle stroll around Eyam village, just a short walk away, and perhaps pause at the Eyam Tea Rooms for your first slice of homemade cake. In the evening, unwind with a scrumptious meal at the cottage or wander down to the village pub for a relaxed welcome dinner.
Saturday: History & Heights
Start your day with a visit to Eyam Museum and the village’s historic plague sites. This poignant and powerful story sets the tone for the depth of history you’ll find throughout the Peaks. After a light lunch, drive over to Monsal Head for a panoramic view and a short circular walk along the viaduct. Dinner tonight could be at The Packhorse Inn in Little Longstone or something hearty and homemade back at the cottage.
Sunday: Chatsworth & Cream Teas
Dedicate this day to the grandeur of Chatsworth House. Wander the gardens in the morning light, explore the house’s treasures, and treat yourself to lunch at the Cavendish Restaurant or one of the estate’s cafes. On your way back, stop by Edensor village for a slower pace and perhaps a cream tea at Edensor Tea Cottage. Spend your evening curled up by the fire or watching the stars from your garden seat.
Monday: Local Villages & Little Luxuries
Ease into Monday with a gentle morning visit to Great Longstone or Ashford-in-the-Water. Browse independent shops and potter through picture-perfect streets. In the afternoon, stop by Bakewell for a little retail therapy and, of course, a slice of Bakewell Pudding. The Rutland Arms or Piedaniel’s are lovely choices for dinner if you’d like to dine out.
Tuesday: Walk & Wonder
Lace up your boots for one of the Peak District’s most iconic walks: the Froggatt, Curbar and White Edge circular. This 6-mile route offers wild moorland, red deer sightings, and views that feed the soul. Pause midway for a pub lunch at The Grouse Inn, then wind your way back. Your evening is for rest and recharging, perhaps star gazing on your patio.
Wednesday: Markets & Makers
Spend today browsing one of the region’s local markets (Bakewell Market is a highlight if it’s a Monday) or visit the charming shops of Hathersage. If you’re interested in design, don’t miss the David Mellor Design Museum. Lunch at the Hathersage Social Club is always a treat. In the afternoon, head to the Longshaw Estate for a woodland wander.
Thursday: One Last Look
Thursday is your gentle wind-down day. After a lazy breakfast, take one last walk from your cottage door, perhaps down through Pretty Wood and on to Stoney Middleton. Pick up a souvenir in Eyam or visit Foolow’s duck pond for a few final photos. End your day with a final meal out at The Barrel Inn, gazing over five counties as the sun sets.
Friday: Departure
Say farewell to your cottage, feeling lighter, rested, and a little more connected to the land. We hope your stay has brought you calm, inspiration, and memories to carry home.
