Embark on a memorable walk from the Longshaw Estate, a journey into the heart of the Peak District. Nestled among ancient woodlands and lively, tumbling streams, this National Trust treasure invites you to immerse yourself in nature’s finest offerings.
Park at Longshaw Estate
After parking at the car park at the Longshaw estate which is free for National Trust members, start your adventure at the delightful café, where you can savour treats ranging from a range of hot meals, pasties and delectable cakes to a rich selection of aromatic coffees. With your senses awakened, follow the path towards Padley Gorge, where a burst of vibrant rhododendrons, especially stunning in late spring and summer welcomes you.
Padley Gorge
Stroll past a tranquil lake which is still on the Longshaw Estate and venture down into Padley Gorge, where whimsical stepping stones and quaint bridges add charm to your journey. You’d be hard pushed to find a more magical spot than Padley Gorge. With gently flowing streams and tumbling waterfalls in a woodland setting. Unsurprisingly, it’s also surrounded by great walks and is a popular spot for picnics and paddling. In the low season it is even better. On a spontaneous detour, I ascended to Over Owler Tor, a striking cluster of rocks that offers one of the Peak District’s most photogenic views.
Adding a layer of poignant history, the Longshaw Estate once served as a hospital for World War I soldiers, a reminder of the resilience and spirit of those who found solace in these very surroundings. This historical echo enriches the experience, inviting you to reflect on the past as you wander its timeless trails.
On the return from the rocks, follow the stream upstream where nature’s beauty unfolds at every turn, from cascading waterfalls and rugged boulders to the lush, ancient woods. This 6km hike not only invigorated my spirit but also left me ready to unwind with a comforting hot drink and a cosy log fire at the end of the day.
Longshaw Estate is more than just a walk, it’s an enchanting journey that reawakens your love for nature, history, and the simple joys of life. For anyone seeking a refreshing escape and a deeper connection with the landscape, this is an experience not to be missed.
