Heading Out
For those who love a walk with history, scenery, and a sense of quiet adventure, this stunning 7-mile walk to Eyam Moor from your cottage door is a must. With a few inclines along the way, it offers breathtaking views, fascinating ancient landmarks, and a true sense of peace.
This is a wonderful walk in all seasons, but after wet weather, the paths can get a little muddy, so be sure to wear good walking boots before setting off.
Climbing to Eyam Moor & The Trig Point
The walk begins right from your doorstep, leading you gently up towards Eyam Moor. At its highest point, you’ll reach the trig point, a fantastic sunrise or sunset spot, offering panoramic views of the Peak District’s rolling hills and rugged beauty.
As you descend, you’ll stumble across Eyam Moor’s ancient stone circles, some of the largest in Derbyshire. Wet Withens, a Bronze Age embanked stone circle, dates back over 3,000 years and is steeped in mystery. These ancient formations add a touch of magic to the landscape, reminding you just how deep the history of this land runs.
Through Woodland & Moorland to Sir William Hill
From here, the walk dips through woodlands and down to a gentle stream, where the only sounds are birdsong and the rustling of leaves. As you climb back up through the heather-covered moor, keep an eye out for wild bilberries, which can be picked in late summer.
At Sir William Hill, you rejoin the old Roman road, marking the final stretch before descending into Eyam village. If you’re looking for a shorter option, you can park here and start the walk from this point.
A Well-Deserved Rest in Eyam
Once back in the village, it’s time for a well-earned pit stop at the Tea Rooms. Sit back, rest your legs, and enjoy a hot drink and a slice of homemade cake before making the final short walk back up Riley Lane to your cottage.
This is the perfect walk for those who want something more than a gentle ramble but still manageable in around three hours. With stunning scenery, rich history, and a peaceful atmosphere, it’s a route you’ll want to return to time and time again.
